WHY WORK FOR LAND OF LINCOLN?

Land of Lincoln is a public interest law firm, offering new and experienced lawyers a challenging career addressing the critical civil legal needs of poor people and the elderly. As a Land of Lincoln attorney, you will represent clients in individual cases, major cases and appeals. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting intake interviews and making case acceptance decisions;
  • Providing legal advice, brief services or extended representation; communicating with adverse parties and attorneys; preparing and trying cases; and negotiating settlements.
  • Developing an area of specialization.
  • Participating in community group and/or economic development activities.

You will receive supervision from experienced managing and staff attorneys. About one-third of Land of Lincoln attorneys have worked in legal services for more than 15 years. You will also receive excellent training. Each year Land of Lincoln offers an intensive trial training for new attorneys. Land of Lincoln provides desktop Internet, e-mail and Lexis access.

Benefits. Our starting salary is comparable to other Illinois public interest firms. We also offer excellent benefits including medical insurance, group dental, a 401(k) retirement savings plan with a 4% employer match, parental leave; 12 holidays; 12 days of sick leave annually; 3 days of personal leave each year; and 12 days of vacation during first year of employment; 15 during the second year; 20 during the third through the ninth year, and 25 thereafter.

Office Locations. Land of Lincoln's five regonal offices serve central and southern Illinois. Each office serves a multi-county area. Offices are located in Alton and East St. Louis in the in the St. Louis Area; Carbondale, the home of Southern Illinois University; Springfield, the state capitol; and Champaign-Urbana, the home of University of Illinois.

Summer Law Clerks. Land of Lincoln encourages applications for paid (preferably work study) and unpaid clerkships from highly qualified law students interested in exploring public service work. While the specific work will vary from office to office, law clerks can participate in a range of legal activities, including client interviews and assistance with initial intake, negotiations with the opposing party, legal research and writing, community education and outreach or participation in administrative hearings or court proceedings. Students who have completed their second year of law school and have been certified under Illinois’ 7-11 rule may have the opportunity to directly handle a court proceeding under the supervision of an Land of Lincoln attorney. Legal aid is often called upon to assist clients who are having difficulty obtaining or keeping benefits to which they are entitled. LOL staff helps clients navigate the complicated web of rules and regulations that govern these programs.
